Harbin for the Ice Festival |

This past year, we went to the Ice and Snow Festival in Harbin, and it was one of the best vacations we have gone on inside China. In January every year, it features several large "parks" full of ice and snow scupltures that are huge, plus some have snow tubing slides and other activities. We also visited a tiger park - interesting if you want to see tigers up close, but not necessarily a good example of animals in their wild habitat (all looked more than a little hungry). And there is also some interesting Russian culture in the city, as it is not far from the border of Russia. We stayed at a Shangri-La, which is very nice and conveniently located to everything.
I highly recommend a 3 day trip to the Ice Festival for any expat in Shanghai!

Not everyone liked the hot pot in the igloo, but it was really good!
One of 800 tigers at the Harbin Tiger Park, all of which seemed a little hungry...

Don't forget to stock up on cold weather gear at Decathlon. This vacation is probably not good for kids younger than 5. The cold is bitter, but the bigger problem is getting them to put on all the layers of clothing, coats, hats, mittens, boots, etc -- little kids hate that, and invariably need to go the bathroom right afterwards!
